Why Was The Ericson Bit Created, and By Who?
Charles Erickson created the bit to improve Detachable Bit Rock Drills. Part of the idea is to render the rock drill as a starter drill, unlike the previous form. Furthermore, it was created to prevent free lateral movements of the bit to on the shank without interfering with the limited longitudinal movement between these two parts. Finally it devised a connection between the bit and the shank, having the previously mentioned characteristics which could be actuated by a suitable punch or drift to release it.
What is it Used For?
The invention is useful in the construction of drills as set forth in which a dovetail shaped portion or tongue on the bit is adapted to be received into a correspondingly shaped slot in the shank extremity.
